Centre for European Studies becomes Institute of European Studies

Dear Students, Alumni, Colleagues and Friends,

As you may have noticed, we have recently changed the webpage's name from "Centre for European Studies" to "Institute of European Studies". The change in the name does not represent a sudden change in the people or institutions behind it. In fact, we think it says better who we are.

Still don’t know why the name changed? A full explanation is impossible without brief recourse to the history of European Studies at the Jagiellonian University, which you can find below.

The Centre for European Studies traces its history to the founding of the Inter-Faculty "Unit" for European Studies at the Jagiellonian University in 1993. In the 1990s, this research institute offered open lectures and classes in both Polish and English, exchange opportunities, and a small library, but it did not offer its own degree programmes.

In 1999, the Unit was formally transformed into the "Centre for European Studies", part of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian University. In the 2000-2001 academic year, the Master's degree programmes (in both Polish and English) were launched and we welcomed the first full-time students. We also became hosts to students coming to our new Study Abroad programme.

In 2001, the Centre for European Studies was invited into the newly-created Faculty of International and Political Studies of the Jagiellonian University and became one part of the Institute for Regional Studies. But by 2004, the Centre had grown enormously in size, scope and popularity, and budded off to become its own independent "Institute of European Studies”.

But we had also become too large to fit into any single space available at the University at that time. We ended up spread over two locations, with the English-language parts of the Institute mostly at Garbarska street. So, although part of the Institute, we kept using "The Centre for European Studies" as a convenient and familiar name for that portion of the Institute which was located there.

In 2021, the administration, teaching staff, and students of both the Polish-taught and English-taught programmes moved back together (finally) in a new building on Reymonta 4. And we realised that we no longer needed to make the distinction between two different locations (and semi-independent operations) and we can simply call ourselves what we are, the "Institute of European Studies".

Currently, at the Institute for European Studies, we run our programmes in the Polish language and in English side-by-side. We maintain the same cooperation with our partners worldwide, and all the good work that used to appear under the name of “Centre for European Studies” continues uninterrupted.
