This challenging and innovative double degree programme enables students to understand the history of communism and why it collapsed, gaining an informed knowledge of the process of economic and political transformation in the former communist states. To this end, the programme is structured to offer a wide variety of options for advanced study of the region’s shared Communist past and the ways in which this has shaped – and continues to shape – the dynamics of post-Communist and post-Cold War transformation. The geographical area to be treated by this programme, therefore, spans across the wider post-Communist world, in a region that encompasses Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and the newly independent states of the Caucasus and Central Asia.
The 2-year programme is structured around three predefined mobility periods at three different Consortium Partner Universities across Europe and Eurasia.

Suitable for: This programme is suitable for students seeking comprehensive training as experts in the contemporary challenges and realities facing Central and Eastern Europe and its neighbours. Intensive foreign language training is also an integral part of the curriculum. Students wishing to study Polish, Russian, German or French are highly encouraged to join CES.
Programme structure: The programme is structured around three predefined mobility periods at three different universities across Europe, Russia, and Eurasia. Also included is a fourth flexible mobility period during which you will undertake independent study. The mobility periods are designed to enable you to engage with a variety of perspectives on the programme’s core themes.
A research proposal submitted at the end of semester 1 in year 1 will determine future mobility patterns and study pathway diversification in semester 2. In year 2 you will continue under the same study pathway. The research proposal will have a strong influence on the allocation of the year 2 pathway partner, where you will undertake coursework. Internship placements are part of the programme during the 3rd semester of studies.

Year 2- Semester 1: Corvinus University of Budapest, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, University of Sarajevo (UNSA), Bosnia and Herzegovina, KIMEP University in Almaty, Ilia State University in Tbilisi
Year 2- Semester 2: You will continue on the mobility pattern started in semester 1. One-year study mobilities in the region are aimed at strengthening the language skills acquired during Year 1 in Tartu & Glasgow. You will complete your dissertation under the principal supervision of the pathway partner institution, with Glasgow and Tartu as co-supervisors.
