High school diploma or equivalent

Secondary school diploma, maturity certificate, International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) or European Baccalaureate certificate. Please note that the documents obtained outside of Poland, other than the IB diploma and EB certificate, are required to be authenticated with an apostille or legalised. 

English language proficiency requirements

At the registration stage for the programme: No language certificate is required - English proficiency will be verified during an interview.

IMPORTANT - At the enrolment stage: Some candidates will be required to submit a document confirming proficiency in the language of instruction (for English, at least level B2), in accordance with the Minister's decree.

Please check carefully whether this requirement applies to you, as it depends on your citizenship and/or the country in which you obtained the document authorizing you to undertake studies. Full details are available here.

Candidates who do not possess a language certificate at the stage of submitting the application will be invited for an interview to verify their English language proficiency. Achieving at least 60% of the total points is required to pass the interview. Passing the interview allows the candidate to proceed in the admission process; however, the recognised language certificate must still be submitted by the time of registration.

Proficiency in the Polish language is not required.

Application Step by Step

STEP I

• Submit an Online Application  (via University's Online Application System) and upload all the required documents to the system.

REGISTRATION FEE:

100 PLN (non-refundable)

Registration fee is paid via BANK TRANSFER. Bank transfer details can be accessed at the OAS account. 

STEP II 

If the application is successful you will receive a notification of acceptance in the OAS system as well as an official e-mail informing about further steps. 

Documents required upon enrolment (to be sent via email):

• Scanned and signed personal questionnaire, downloaded from the OAS system;
• Scan of the applicant's secondary school diploma, maturity certificate, International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) or European Baccalaureate certificate (with its original available upon request) - documents obtained outside of Poland, other than the IB diploma and EB certificate, are required to be authenticated with an apostille or legalised; 
• Certificate verifying language proficiency (the list is here);
• Sworn translation into English or Polish of all documents submitted if they were issued in a language other than English or Polish;
• Declaration of submission of original copies of all documents required upon enrolment by no later than 25 September 2026 - under a condition of withdrawal from the university otherwise. 

Candidates holding a secondary qualification obtained out of Poland, other than an International Baccalaureate diploma or European Baccalaureate certificate, excluding certificates obtained in member states of the UE, OECD, EFTA and certificates recognized on the basis of international agreements are required to submit additionally the following documents: decision on recognition of the document issued abroad, confirming holder's right to apply for study programmes in higher education institutions in the Republic of Poland, issued by the appropriate education authority (kurator oświaty), or candidate's written declaration to deliver the decision by no later than 25 September 2026.

STEP III 

Documents required upon arrival:

• Original the secondary school diploma, maturity certificate;
• Photocopy of an insurance policy or the European Health Insurance Card held by the student in case of sickness or emergency;
• Passport.

English language proficiency requirements

For enrolment in programmes taught in a foreign language, candidates must provide a document confirming their proficiency in the language of instruction (at least at B2 level for English, as per the Minister’s decree). The required document must be submitted at the time of registration. A list of certificates recognised by the Jagiellonian University is provided below.

Please be advised that admissions to the IMESS (University College of London), EPS (Charles University) and IMRCEES programmes (University of Glasgow) are different and applicants for these programmes should apply to the respective Consortium coordinator.

There are two admissions rounds for the MA in European Studies. Once all the available spaces have been filled, admissions will be closed. Early application submission is advised.

Minimum Degree Requirements

All candidates must either hold (or expect to obtain) a BA degree from a recognised and accredited university or an equivalent first-cycle degree earned in countries where BA degrees are not offered. Diploma (or supplement) should include information about holders eligibility to continue education in the country of issue. If such information is not provided with an additional statement from the candidate should be submitted.

Candidates possessing an MA degree may also apply. A degree in a relevant subject area is preferred; however, all applicants who can demonstrate an interest in European Studies are encouraged to apply.

Application Step by Step

When applying online, prospective students must register for the field of study declaring one of the specialisation (EU Studies; Central and Eastern European Studies; European Culture and Heritage)/double degree programmes. Students may change their specialisation once accepted, if necessary.

Applicants have 20 minutes to complete the online application. The Statement of Purpose form is available in the "See Also" column so that applicants may plan their response.

STEP 1: Documents and application

1. Create your IRK/OAS (Online Application System) account and complete the necessary sections before you register for the programme. Some sections will require to upload documents (e.g. to confirm Foreigner's status in Poland).
2. Choose the MA in European Studies from the list of programmes 

During completing your application you will be requested to complete additional information:

• final diploma result - if this is not yet known, a predicted grade should be entered,
• explanation of the motivation for their choice of programme. Max. 6000 characters. 

3. Upload document confirming command of English (applies to native speakers as well):

• list of documents accepted by the Jagiellonian University

4. Upload documents required for calculating the final result:

• Transcript of grades **
• Curriculum Vitae (résumé), highlighting academic achievements (Curriculum Vitae in the Europass format)

NOTE: To be uploaded, documents should be merged into one PDF file.

* Every document issued in a language other than Polish or English has to be submitted with a certified (“sworn”) translation into Polish or English.

7. Pay the registration fee to confirm your application

To confirm each registration for studies, you have to pay the registration fee in the amount of 85 PLN.

STEP 2: Documents Required Upon Enrolment

Enrolment is made remotely (by correspondence) only by the deadline specified in the schedule – the candidate has to send scans of a complete set of documents and then deliver the originals for inspection to the student office no later than September 25, 2026. Remote enrolment is possible only by August 31, 2026.

Once admitted, the applicant will be required to provide the following additional documents:

• personal questionnaire downloaded from the system, including the photograph
• higher education diploma*
• passport or ID card (for European Union citizens) or passport (for non-European Union citizens)
• documents downloaded from the system from the “Documents and further steps” link 
• apostille or legislation for a diploma issued outside of Poland **
• certified translation of all documents issued in a language other than the programme language
• document certifying the required command of the programme language of instruction
• insurance proof
• confirmation that the higher education diploma entitles to undertake second-cycle studies: NAWA's Director individual recognition statement

More information

*Candidates who hold higher education diplomas obtained outside Poland are required to submit (at the latest by 25 September 2026 provide diploma obtained outside of Poland authenticated with apostille or legalized. Nostrification and Apostille.

**Every document issued in a language other than Polish or English has to be submitted with a certified (“sworn”) translation into Polish or English.

STEP 3: Documents Required Upon Arrival

Once the student has confirmed his/her registration at IES, a few documents will be required upon arrival. Students should ensure that they collect these documents before their departure to Poland. The deadline of submission depends on the application round. 

Candidates who do not hold Polish citizenship must additionally submit the following documents:

1. Proof of health/casualty insurance for the period of study in Poland - one of the following:

• Photocopy of a document certifying health or casualty insurance (original must be available on request), or
• Photocopy of the European Health Insurance Card (original must be available on request), or
• A declaration confirming that insurance will be taken out with the National Health Fund (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia) immediately at the start of the first semester

If enrolling by post: a written declaration must be included with the enrolment documents, promising to submit this document no later than the end of September 2026. Failure to do so may result in the admissions board denying admission.

2. Medical certificate confirming the candidate has no health conditions that would disqualify them from the study programme:

• Photocopy of the certificate (original must be available on request)

If the candidate does not yet have this document at the time of enrolment, or is enrolling by post: a written declaration must be included with the enrolment documents, promising to submit this document no later than the end of September 2026. Failure to do so may result in the admissions board denying admission.

Evaluation Criteria

The application will be assessed upon the following weight of elements calculated in the scale from 0 - 100 points:

1. Application content - a maximum of 70 points - including:
   • grades in transcript - 50 points;
   • academic and non-academic experience, other achievements, foreign language proficiency - 20 points;
2. Motivation - maximum of 30 points - motivation for undertaking the programme, relevance and originality of academic interests presented in the application (maximum of 6000 characters).

Admission Contact

The application process is quick and easy for students interested in our study abroad programme. Prospective applicants should first consult with their Study Abroad advisor about their academic preparedness and personal aims for their semester or year abroad. 

When applying for the Study Abroad programme at the Institute of European Studies, candidates must submit the following documents:

• Completed application: word document or pdf,
• Written approval to study at the Jagiellonian University from their academic adviser, study abroad counsellor, and/or Registrar of their home institution,
• Original transcript or other records of their academic achievements including degrees earned,
• Curriculum vitae (resumé),
• One passport photograph (35 mm x 45 mm) taken against a white background without a hat or head covering (these cannot be printed photos or xeroxed copies of photos),
• Proof of English proficiency (non-native speakers only).

All documents must be sent as postmarked at the latest by:

• 30 June 2026 for the autumn 2026 semester
• 31 December 2026 for the spring 2027 semester

Deadline extensions may be granted in rare cases and require a written recommendation by a full faculty member from their home university.

After an application has been considered, a candidate is sent a letter of acceptance or rejection. This letter will be mailed to the student's home institution no later than one calendar month after the deadline for the semester.
