History
Initially, English-taught programmes were offered under the name Centre for European Studies, which traced its origins to the establishment of the Inter-Faculty Unit (Zakład) for European Studies at the Jagiellonian University in 1993. In the 1990s, this research institute provided open lectures and classes in both Polish and English, but did not yet offer stand-alone degree programmes. At that time, the undergraduate Study Abroad programme was also launched.
In 1999, the Unit was transformed into the Centre (Katedra) for European Studies within the Faculty of Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University. In the 2000/2001 academic year, Master’s degree programmes (in both Polish and English) were introduced.
In 2001, the Centre for European Studies became part of the newly created Faculty of International and Political Studies at the Jagiellonian University, within the Institute for Regional Studies. By 2004, however, the Centre had expanded in size, scope, and popularity, ultimately attaining the status of the Institute of European Studies.
